Lentils Porridge

Also known as Lentils Porridge (Nigerian Pepper Pottage)

Red or brown lentils cooked the Nigerian way — with a fried pepper base, crayfish and seasoning — give a fast, protein-rich porridge when beans are not on hand. It is a home and diaspora pot, not a heritage duplicate of ewa riro.

Lentils Porridge, Nigerian cooking

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of red or brown lentils, rinsed
  • 2 cooking spoons of palm oil
  • 2 tomatoes, 1 tatashe and 1 Atarodo, blended
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 handful of ground crayfish
  • 2 seasoning cubes
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. 01

Boil the lentils in water until soft but not mush, 20 to 25 minutes. Drain, keeping a little cooking liquid.

  2. 02

Fry onion in palm oil, add the blended pepper and cook until thick. Add crayfish, cubes and salt.

  3. 03

Stir in the lentils and enough liquid to make a thick porridge. Simmer 10 minutes. Serve with bread, dodo or rice.
