Scotch Egg Street Style

Also known as Scotch Egg Street Style (Roadside Version)

The roadside Scotch Egg is spicier, more heavily seasoned and has a thicker, crispier coating from multiple-batch frying compared to the party version. It is sold at bus parks, road junctions and market stalls nationwide — a protein-rich, filling, portable snack that fuels Nigeria's millions of daily commuters.

Scotch Egg Street Style, Nigerian cooking

Ingredients

  • 8 large eggs, hard-boiled and peeled
  • a big portion of minced beef or chicken
  • 1 big onion, finely grated
  • 3 Atarodo, finely blended
  • 1 teaspoon of curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon of thyme
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ground Cameroon pepper
  • 3 seasoning cubes (Knorr), crushed
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 eggs, beaten — for coating
  • 2 big cups of breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for deep-frying

Method

  1. 01

Seasoning the Meat. Combine minced meat with grated onion, blended Atarodo, curry, thyme, garlic powder, Cameroon pepper, crushed seasoning cubes and salt. Mix very thoroughly — the street version is more heavily spiced than the party version.

  2. 02

Wrapping the Eggs. Divide meat into 8 portions. Flatten each, place a peeled boiled egg in the centre and mould meat completely around with no gaps. Coating approximately 1.5 fingers width thick all around — thicker than the party version.

  3. 03

Double Coating. Dip each in beaten egg, coat in breadcrumbs. Dip in egg again and coat in breadcrumbs a second time. This double coating creates the thicker, crispier street-style crust.

  4. 04

Frying. Heat oil to moderate-to-hot heat. Fry for 8 to 10 minutes, turning gently, until deep golden-brown. Lower temperature ensures the thick meat coating cooks all the way through.

  5. 05

Serving. Drain and cool 5 minutes. Serve halved or whole.
