Nigerian Green Smoothie

Also known as Nigerian Green Smoothie (Moringa and Pineapple)

The Nigerian Green Smoothie combines the extraordinary nutritional density of moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) — one of the most nutrient-rich plants known to science — with the tropical sweetness of fresh pineapple to create a genuinely outstanding health smoothie that tastes as good as it nourishes. Moringa leaves contain exceptional levels of vitamins A, C, K and B6, calcium, iron, protein and antioxidants.

Nigerian Green Smoothie, Nigerian cooking

Ingredients

  • 2 big handfuls of fresh young moringa leaves (stripped from stems) OR 2 big big tablespoons of dried moringa powder
  • Half a big fresh ripe pineapple, cut into chunks
  • 1 big ripe banana — for creaminess and sweetness
  • 2 glasses of cold water or coconut water
  • A squeeze of fresh lime juice
  • A small piece of fresh ginger — optional
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. 01

Building the Smoothie. Place all ingredients in a blender in this order: liquid first (water or coconut water), then banana chunks, then pineapple chunks, then moringa leaves or moringa powder, then ginger if using, then ice cubes. This order helps the blender run smoothly.

  2. 02

Blending. Blend at high speed for 2 minutes until completely smooth and uniformly green. If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more water.

  3. 03

Finishing. Add lime juice. Blend 10 more seconds. Taste — the smoothie should be sweet from the banana and pineapple, with a barely perceptible moringa earthiness in the background.

  4. 04

Serving. Pour immediately into glasses. Serve without straining — the fibre content is part of the health benefit.
