Eka Soup (Beniseed Soup)

Also known as Eka Soup (Beniseed / Sesame Soup)

North-Central sesame soup: toasted beniseed ground and cooked like egusi, sometimes with roasted groundnut. Idoma, Tiv (ishwa), Kogi and Ogoja pots. This is the dish listed as Okpa Beniseed Soup in national food inventories.

Eka Soup (Beniseed Soup), Nigerian cooking

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups of beniseed (sesame seeds)
  • 1 cup of roasted groundnuts, optional
  • Assorted meat and dry fish
  • 2 cooking spoons of palm oil
  • Pepper, onion, crayfish, okpei, seasoning and salt
  • Bitter leaf or ugu, a handful

Method

    Toast the sesame on low heat until golden. Cool and grind with the groundnuts if using, to a powder or paste.

    Cook the meats in stock. In a little palm oil, fry onion, then the sesame paste, 2 minutes.

    Add stock, pepper, crayfish and okpei. Simmer 10 minutes. Return the meat, add greens, and cook until the soup is rich and nutty. Serve with pounded yam or fufu.
