Nigerian Chapman

Also known as Nigerian Chapman (Non-Alcoholic Party Punch)

Nigerian Chapman is the most popular non-alcoholic party punch in Nigeria — a refreshing, fruity, brightly coloured drink made from a combination of sweet citrus sodas, fresh fruit juices and aromatic additions that creates a sophisticated, party-worthy drink without any alcohol. Chapman originated in Lagos as a bar drink in the 1970s and has since become the standard non-alcoholic offering at Nigerian restaurants, parties and social events.

Ingredients

  • 1 big bottle of orange Fanta (approximately 2 glasses worth)
  • 1 big bottle of Sprite or 7-Up (approximately 2 glasses worth)
  • A generous splash of Ribena (blackcurrant cordial) or grenadine — for colour
  • 1 big glass of fresh orange juice
  • 1 big glass of fresh pineapple juice or pineapple Fanta
  • Half a cucumber, thinly sliced — the Chapman signature garnish
  • 1 fresh orange, sliced into rounds
  • Fresh lemon or lime juice — a generous squeeze
  • A small piece of fresh ginger, very finely grated — optional
  • Ice cubes — generous quantity

Method

  1. 01

Preparing the Glasses or Punch Bowl. Fill individual glasses or a large punch bowl generously with ice cubes.

  2. 02

Building the Chapman. Pour the orange Fanta over the ice. Add the Sprite or 7-Up. Pour in the fresh orange juice and pineapple juice. Add the splash of Ribena or grenadine — this gives the Chapman its characteristic deep colour. The proportions can be adjusted to taste.

  3. 03

Adding the Signature Garnishes. Add the thinly sliced cucumber rounds — the cucumber is the most distinctive and unusual element of Chapman, adding a cool, fresh, slightly vegetal note that contrasts beautifully with the sweet fruit juices. Add the fresh orange slices. Squeeze in fresh lemon or lime juice. Add finely grated ginger if using for extra depth.

  4. 04

Serving. Stir very gently to combine without losing too much of the fizz. Serve immediately while the sodas are at maximum effervescence.
