Pepper Soup
Also known as Pepper Soup (Post-Delivery Ceremony — Igbo Tradition)
Post-Delivery Pepper Soup is one of the most culturally significant ceremonial foods in Igbo tradition — prepared specifically for a new mother during the Omugo, the traditional Igbo post-partum confinement period of 28 days. During this period, the new mother is cared for by her mother or mother-in-law and is fed a specific diet of intensely spiced, warming soups and foods designed to aid recovery, promote milk production and restore the mother's strength.

Ingredients
- 1 big fresh catfish, cleaned — OR half a small goat, cut into pieces
- 1 tablespoon of ground uziza seeds — generous, more than usual
- 1 teaspoon of ground ehuru (calabash nutmeg)
- 1 teaspoon of ground Cameroon pepper
- 4 to 5 Atarodo (very hot chilli peppers) — the spice is intentional and therapeutic
- 1 big handful of fresh scent leaves (nchanwu), torn
- A small handful of fresh uziza leaves, shredded
- 3 big handfuls of ground dried crayfish
- 1 big onion, sliced
- 3 seasoning cubes (Knorr), crushed
- Salt to taste
- 6 to 7 glasses of water
- A small amount of palm oil — optional, for some families
Method
- 01
Preparing the Protein. If using catfish: clean with alum and salt as described in Recipe #196. If using goat: clean thoroughly with lemon juice and salt. Season lightly.
- 02
Building the Therapeutic Broth. Place the protein in a wide pot with all the water. Add sliced onion, ground uziza seeds, ground ehuru, ground Cameroon pepper, whole Atarodo, ground crayfish, seasoning cubes and salt. For goat, bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes before adding the fish if using both.
- 03
Simmering to Full Flavour. Bring the broth to a vigorous boil, then reduce to medium. Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until the protein is fully cooked and the broth is deeply aromatic and intensely spiced. The uziza seeds provide the primary therapeutic warmth.
- 04
Adding the Leaves. Add the torn scent leaves and shredded uziza leaves in the final 3 minutes. Taste and adjust — this soup should be very hot (from the peppers), very aromatic and deeply comforting.
- 05
Serving with Intention. Serve very hot in a deep bowl, making sure the new mother receives generous portions of both the protein and the broth. In traditional practice, this soup is served multiple times daily during the Omugo period.
