Garri with Sugar and Coconut
Garri with Sugar and Coconut is a beloved Yoruba sweet snack that transforms humble dry garri into a satisfying, naturally sweet treat. Dry garri is combined with freshly grated coconut or dried coconut shreds and sugar, then eaten dry without any water — the natural sweetness of the coconut and sugar blending with the slightly tangy garri to create a surprisingly complex and enjoyable snack.

Ingredients
- 2 big cups of dry white garri (do not soak)
- 3 big tablespoons of white sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3 big big tablespoons of freshly grated coconut or dried coconut shreds
- A pinch of salt — optional, to enhance the sweetness
Method
- 01
Grating the Coconut. If using fresh coconut, crack open the coconut, separate the white flesh from the shell and grate finely using a box grater.
- 02
Combining. Place the dry garri in a bowl. Add the grated coconut and sugar. If using, add a pinch of salt.
- 03
Mixing. Mix everything together thoroughly with a spoon until the sugar and coconut are evenly distributed throughout the garri.
- 04
Eating. Eat dry — do not add water. Pick up spoonfuls and eat directly. The dry garri absorbs the coconut moisture and sugar as you eat, creating a pleasant texture contrast.
